Meeting Highlights from 15th Annual World Congress on Insulin Resistance, Diabetes & Cardiovascular Disease

The 2017 WCIRDC, under the auspices of the Metabolic Institute of American, aimed to bring advances in diabetes, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular complications, obesity, energy balance, and multiple metabolic mechanisms that inform the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions in endocrinology. 

The theme of this three-day, continuing medical education conference, was Exploring new frontiers in metabolism—Tomorrow's clinical science today. EndocrineWeb reported on abstracts and presentations that offer perspectives on clinical factors relative to insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, and the pathophysiology of adipocytes, beta cells, the gut, to inform patient care.

In particular, exclusive video highlights from:

  • the winner of the Gold Award for Best Abstract, for his introduction of a predictive test to advance prevention for complications of diabetes 
  • the Distinguished Leader in Insulin Resistance for his work in identifying factors that affect the ability of the beta cell to compensate for insulin resistance

Specific meeting highlights are available from the following presenters:

Megan Montgomery, PhD, and Eliot Brinton MD, demonstrated the efficacy of adding a pure EPA omega 3 formulation to management in women with type 2 diabetes in which statins did not sufficiently lower their triglycerides.

A case was made for endocrinologists and pediatricians to instruct parents on the importance of eliminating beverages and foods high in fructose to improve lipid profiles in at-risk children, by Alejandro Gugliucci, MD, PhD, dean of research at Touro University-California in Vallejo.

Robert J. Chilton, DO, FACC, an interventional cardiologist, and an associate professor of cardiology at the Univerity of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, presented findings of a diastolic heart failure study, in which patients experienced shortness of breath not simply because of their obese status but as a result of excess blood volume. These patients, when treated effectively, were able to feel better and gain function to enjoy activities of daily living. 

Richard Bergman, PhD, Alfred Jay Firestein Chair in Diabetes Research, and  director of the Cedars-Sinai Diabetes and Obesity Research Institute, Los Angeles, who was honored with recognition as the Distinguished Leader in Insulin Resistance, presented a keynote address, How they talk: Inter-Organ Communication and Diabetes Pathogenesis regarding causes of type 2 diabetes, particularly as it manifests differently in at-risk subgroups such as African Americans.

Francesca Piccinini, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher in the Diabetes and Obesity Research Institute at the Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California introduced a simulated methodology to estimate insulin sensitivity more effectively in patients with diabetes using an oral glucose tolerance test; she made a case for this new method, developed with Richard Bergman, director of the Cedars-Sinai Insitute, in an oral poster presentation at the World Congress on Insulin Resistance, Diabetes, and Cardiovascular Disease 2017 in Universal City, California.

Endocrinologist, Claude Lardinois, MD, FACP, MACN, FACE, an emeritus professor of medicine from the University of Nevada School of Medicine at Reno, shared lessons learned in a "person on the street" interview sessions and best poster presentations for endocrinologists who were not able to attend.
